Dr. Shirin Peters earned her M.D. at New York Medical College and is board-certified in General Internal Medicine. She completed residency training at the Former St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan, with a short stint at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Peters spent the year after completion of her residency training at a private practice in North Carolina. At the same time she also worked at a clinical research company where she acted as Principal Investigator on several large clinical trials. Here she learned about many emerging medical therapies for common chronic diseases, in their final stages of testing before FDA approval.
Dr. Peters developed an interest in treatments for obesity through her work experiences so far, both in New York and North Carolina, as well as experiences with the disease entity and its complications in her personal life. She noticed that obesity was either the root cause or an exacerbating factor for many chronic medical problems in her patients. She began to feel that finding an effective way to treat obesity in a person would be the ultimate preventative medicine and would lead to significant improvements in many of their other medical problems.
After studying materials from the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, and the International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine, Dr. Peters observed a weight loss program already established at the practice where she worked. She attended courses on medical weight loss strategies, developed an arsenal of proven approaches to weight loss, and Urban Orchid Medical was born.
