One of the few surgeons in the world to have extensive experience with—and to be certified on—all the major laser platforms available in the country today, Dr. Bonanni is a fellowship-trained corneal-refractive surgeon who has performed over 60,000 successful laser refractive procedures. He is an expert in all types of laser vision correction, including LASIK, PRK, and LASEK. Dr. Bonanni is a medical source for Women’s Health Magazine, ABC News, and other media organizations.
Educated at Princeton, he went on to receive his M.D. degree from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School and completed eye surgery residency training at Robert Wood Johnson-University Hospital Cooper.
Having done Ph.D. work in biophysics and physiology prior to completing his medical degree, Dr. Bonanni is uniquely qualified to understand, evaluate, and employ the constantly emerging new laser technologies for vision correction. He has taught physiology at New York University and did his refractive fellowship work at the state-of-the-art Duke University Eye Center.
While at Duke, Dr. Bonanni discovered a passion for working with cutting-edge technology to offer the maximum benefits in vision repair and enhancement, a tradition he continues to explore and expand upon in private practice. In addition, he teaches, lectures, and writes on corneal disease and refractive surgery. Many of the leading refractive surgeons have either been taught and/or have had their vision corrected by Dr. Bonanni. He has been the director of four major refractive centers in the country and has devoted himself to vision correction for over ten years.
Dr. Bonanni is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is also a member of the American and European Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the International Society of Refractive Surgery. There is no substitute for experience. Dr. Bonanni has spent over 15 years performing refractive surgery and has personally performed over 60,000 successful procedures. He is a Duke University fellowship-trained corneal and refractive specialist. It is important to select someone who has encountered special cases (maybe similar to yours) and has dealt with them successfully. You should also look for someone who has an in-depth knowledge of the technologies employed in today’s evolving laser vision correction field. Dr. Bonanni is one of a few surgeons in the country to be certified on all the available laser systems. Training and experience like his produce better results and fewer complications.
Dr. Bonanni is often called upon to manage complications of other laser centers and consulted by other doctors for his expertise and knowledge.
Dr. Bonanni is one of the few surgeons to be designated a trainer for the Wavelight Allegretto laser.
Lasik is one of the safest surgeries performed today. To keep it so safe, Dr. Bonanni examines each patient himself and has strict criteria when considering a patient for surgery. Gotham Lasik has the most up-to-date diagnostic equipment, assuring you that your evaluation is consistent with the latest knowledge and that the surgery is safe for you. Choosing a LASIK surgeon who uses state-of-the-art technology and one who has extensive experience and training can also make your LASIK experience safer.
An avid wine collector and food connoisseur, Dr. Bonanni’s interests also include the arts, as he himself is a musician and artist. His interest in vision and sports stems from his original research at Princeton on the effects of exercise on the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
