About Dr. Heidi Kling

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 18 years of experience helping people use psychotherapy to work through difficulties or obstacles they may be facing at different points in their lives--whether this be finding the right career path, resolving on-going conflicts in relationships, coping with stress or painful experiences such as loss or trauma, or struggling with addiction or other self-destructive behaviors. I use a direct and interactive approach to engage clients and help them to clarify problems, gain a better understanding of what is going on for them externally and internally, apply strategies to minimize negative behavior patterns, and cope more effectively with difficult emotions such as sadness, anger or pain. Although I am solution focused and results oriented, I also encourage self-reflection so that problems are less likely to recur in the future. At times, this may require confronting past experiences that are surfacing in the present in the form of depression, anxiety, anger, or problems with intimacy. In addition to working closely with clients to manage symptoms of depression and anxiety, I specialize in treating eating disorders, dealing with infertility, career counseling and problems in partner, peer, and family relationships. Ultimately, the work and experience of psychotherapy can increase motivation and the capacity to change, as well as allow clients to feel freer and more in control of their lives--and be less alone in their efforts to achieve this. Along with my private practice, I have supervised students and staff psychologists at The Village Institute for Psychotherapy and am currently an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University.
